Barium Studies

X-ray studies of the digestive tract using a barium contrast — barium swallow, meal and enema at the Baddi center, on our digital X-ray system.

What Are Barium Studies?

Making the digestive tract visible

Barium is a chalky contrast that coats the inside of the digestive tract, making its outline visible on X-rays. As it travels, the radiologist takes a series of images to study each segment.

  • Barium swallow — throat and food pipe
  • Barium meal — stomach and upper intestine
  • Barium enema — the large intestine

These studies evaluate swallowing difficulty, reflux, ulcers, blockages and bowel conditions when endoscopy isn't available or suitable. Preparation differs by study — see the preparation guide; we give every patient a written sheet at booking.

Barium is not used if a perforation or leak is suspected, in complete bowel obstruction, in suspected toxic megacolon, or shortly after certain endoscopic biopsies — in those situations a water-soluble contrast study is done instead. If you choke on food or fluids, tell us before the study so we can use the safest contrast and technique.

During the study

You drink the barium (meal) or it's introduced gently via a small tube (enema). The radiologist guides you through positions and breath holds; the study takes 30–60 minutes.

Afterwards

Your stools will look chalky white for a day or two — that's the barium passing out. Drink extra water; eat normally.

Reporting

Images are reviewed and reported by our radiologists the same day, and the report is shared with your doctor.
