HSG (Hysterosalpingography)
An X-ray study of the uterus and fallopian tubes — a key fertility investigation, done under specialist supervision at the Baddi center.
Are the tubes open? This test answers
A fine catheter delivers a contrast dye into the uterus while X-ray images track its flow. If the dye spills into the abdominal cavity through the tubes, the tubes are open — a key question in infertility evaluation.
HSG also outlines the uterine cavity, picking up polyps, fibroids or adhesions that can affect implantation. It's typically scheduled between day 6 and 12 of the menstrual cycle, after the period and before ovulation.
Most women feel period-like cramping while the dye is injected; for some it is strong for a minute or two. Taking a painkiller an hour before, as advised, helps a lot. Tell us immediately if you feel faint. The test takes about 15–20 minutes and is done under the supervision of our consultant radiologists.
Before the test
Book between day 6–12 of your cycle. Tell us about infections, pain or bleeding — your doctor will confirm it's the right time. Preparation checklist: (a) avoid intercourse from the first day of your cycle until the test; (b) tell us about any pelvic infection, discharge, pain or bleeding — active infection is a reason to postpone; (c) tell us about iodine allergy — the dye is iodine-based; (d) take a painkiller (NSAID) 30–60 minutes before, as advised; (e) a urine pregnancy test is done on the day if there is any chance of pregnancy.
During the test
You lie on the X-ray table; the radiologist gently inserts the catheter and injects dye in small steps, taking images at each stage. You can see the dye flow on screen.
Afterwards
Mild cramping and light spotting for a day or two are normal. Fever, foul discharge, heavy bleeding or severe pain after the test = possible infection, seek care. The report is discussed with your gynecologist, who plans the next steps.
