CT Scan Radiation — How Safe Is It Really?

"Doctor, isn't a CT scan full of radiation?" — the most common question in my reporting room. The honest answer: a CT scan uses radiation, the dose matters, and doctors order CTs precisely because the information they give usually outweighs the small risk. Let's look at the numbers without the fear-mongering.

What "radiation dose" means

Radiation dose is measured in millisieverts (mSv). Some useful comparisons:

  • Natural background radiation in a year: about 3 mSv (we're all exposed — from soil, sun, food).
  • Chest X-ray: about 0.02 mSv — a few days of background.
  • CT chest: about 4–7 mSv in older protocols; 1–3 mSv with modern low-dose techniques.
  • A Mumbai–Delhi flight return trip: about 0.01 mSv.

So a modern low-dose CT chest sits somewhere between about four months and one year of natural background radiation - and an older-protocol CT can be one to two years' worth. That is why the machine and the protocol matter as much as the decision to scan. Even at the higher end, the risk is very small, and it is almost always smaller than the risk of missing what the scan is looking for.

Why doctors order CTs

CT is fast and definitive. In head injury or suspected stroke, a CT decides treatment in minutes. In abdominal pain, it finds appendicitis, stones, obstructions and collections that ultrasound can miss. In the chest, it's the gold standard for pneumonia complications, embolism and lung nodules. When seconds count — trauma, stroke, severe pain — CT is often the only scan fast enough.

How we keep doses low

Radiation safety is a discipline, not a slogan. At Hope Diagnostics:

  • We use the Hitachi Eclos 8 — a modern scanner with iterative reconstruction, which produces diagnostic images at markedly lower doses than older machines.
  • We scan only the requested area — no "bonus" coverage.
  • Children get paediatric protocols — dose settings scaled to body size, which is the single biggest lever in paediatric radiation safety.
  • We avoid repeat scans: if you had a CT elsewhere, bring the CD; we compare before rescanning.

When to question a CT — and when not to

A reasonable question is "is this CT really needed?" — your doctor should be able to answer. But remember: CTs are rarely ordered casually. Chronic scanning of the same area without a clear need, or scans in early pregnancy without discussion, deserve a conversation. Everything else — a doctor's judgment based on your symptoms — is exactly what the system is designed for.

If you're still worried after reading this, say so. A good radiologist will explain the dose for your scan and, when appropriate, suggest alternatives like ultrasound or MRI — both radiation-free.
