MRI vs CT Scan — What's the Difference and Which Does Your Doctor Mean?

Your doctor scribbles "MRI brain" or "CT chest" on a prescription, and you nod — but what do those letters actually mean? Both MRI and CT are cross-sectional scans that show your body in "slices", but they work on completely different physics and answer different questions.

The short answer

A CT scan uses X-rays to build cross-sectional images — excellent for bones, the chest, the abdomen in emergencies, and trauma. An MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — excellent for soft tissues: the brain, spinal cord, joints, ligaments, muscles and the female pelvis. CT is fast (minutes); MRI takes longer (20–45 minutes) but gives unmatched soft-tissue detail with no radiation at all.

How a CT scan works

The scanner is a ring; the table moves you through it while an X-ray beam rotates around you. A computer stitches the readings into detailed slices. Modern scanners like the Hitachi Eclos 8 at our Baddi, Nalagarh and Nohar centers are fast — most scans take 5–10 minutes on the table — and use dose-reduction technology to keep radiation as low as possible.

CT is the workhorse of emergency medicine: it is usually the first scan for head injury, suspected stroke (though MRI is more sensitive later), chest pain, abdominal pain and road-traffic accidents. It is also superb for the lungs and for planning surgery.

How an MRI works

An MRI machine is a large magnet — the field at our Philips 1.5 Tesla scanner in Baddi is tens of thousands of times stronger than the Earth's. It aligns the hydrogen nuclei in the water and fat in your body, then measures how they relax after radio pulses. Different tissues relax at different rates, which is how the machine builds such exquisite pictures of soft tissue.

Because MRI uses no radiation, it is preferred for repeated imaging, for children where possible, and for studies where CT detail isn't enough: brain tumours and white-matter disease, spinal cord and disc problems, ligament and cartilage injuries of the knee and shoulder, and the pelvis.

Common questions, straight answers

  • Which is more painful? Neither. CT is like a wide X-ray; MRI you simply lie still in. Some people find MRI noise unsettling — ear protection and music help (see your first MRI).
  • Which has more radiation? CT does. One CT chest delivers roughly 50-150 times the dose of a single chest X-ray on the low-dose protocols we use - more on older machines. MRI has none. Doctors order CT only when the benefit clearly outweighs the dose.
  • Can I get both? Often, yes — they're complementary. CT finds the problem fast; MRI then characterizes it in detail.
  • Which costs more? MRI generally costs more than CT, and both vary by body part and whether contrast is used.
