Barium Studies Preparation
Barium studies X-ray the digestive tract after a barium contrast coats its lining. Preparation matters — fasting for barium meal, bowel prep for barium enema — at our Baddi center.
Barium meal vs barium enema
Barium Meal (upper GI)
- Nothing to eat from 10 pm the night before. Small sips of plain water are allowed up to 2 hours before the study unless we tell you otherwise
- No smoking the morning of the test
- You drink a chalky barium solution; X-rays are taken at intervals as it travels down
Barium Enema (lower GI)
- Bowel preparation with laxatives the day before — we give you a written sheet at booking
- Light liquids only the evening before; fasting from midnight
- Barium is introduced gently via a small tube; X-rays track its passage through the colon
Important: tell us about diabetes, constipation medicines, recent colonoscopy, or pregnancy before scheduling. We will adjust the prep plan with your doctor if needed. Call +91 89504 54111 to book — a written preparation sheet is given to every patient.
Expect white stools — it's the barium
The barium passes out of your body over 1–2 days; your stools will look chalky white. Drink plenty of water for 2 days afterwards and eat normally. If you have not passed stool within 2 days, or you have abdominal pain, vomiting or a hard swollen abdomen, contact us or see a doctor — barium can harden in the bowel. A mild laxative is often advised, especially for elderly patients.
- Reports are discussed with your doctor the same day
- Resume normal food and medicines unless advised otherwise
