Seeing blood move
Doppler is ultrasound's special mode: it detects the movement of blood and turns it into color and waveform displays, showing where blood flows, how fast, and whether flow is blocked or reversed.
Common studies: leg Doppler for swelling, varicose veins or suspected clots (DVT); carotid Doppler for stroke risk; renal Doppler; and obstetric Doppler for fetal well-being in high-risk pregnancies.
It's completely painless and radiation-free — the same gel-and-probe experience as a regular ultrasound, taking 20–40 minutes depending on the study.
Preparation: Doppler of the neck, arms and legs needs no preparation. Doppler of the kidneys or abdominal vessels needs 6–8 hours fasting.
